Villas-Boas on transfer alert as contract talks stall

Manchester City and Chelsea are leading the race to sign Ajax wing back Gregory van der Wiel in January after the Dutch defender claimed he will not be signing a new deal in Holland according to the Sun.

Ajax are keen to hold onto their prized asset until after Euro 2012; where they believe van der Wiel will impress and bring them more money for his sale; but will listen to any offers in January.

The Dutch right back; who broke his hand in midweek; is contracted until 2013 but is adamant he will not sign a new deal as he looks to move to one of Europe’s top clubs. City and Chelsea are keen to strengthen in the wing back position but the player’s agent had confirmed he wants to be guaranteed first team football before he signs any deal.

Valencia have also expressed their interest in the defender but cannot compete with the Premier League clubs financially even if they can offer van der Wiel a starting place every week.

The 23-year-old will hold talks with Ajax if any offers come in for him this January, but Chelsea and Manchester City may both have other players on their radars and will not be held to ransom by the Dutch giants.
